Cancer risk due to arsenic contamination in Joss paper

Dear Sir,

Contamination of hazard in objects around us is a big concern in public health. Induction of cancer is possible, and this is a big issue in public health. Arsenic contamination is an important concern. The recent report on the cancer risk due to the contaminated arsenic product in the herbal product is of important.[1] Apart from the herb, there are also other objects that strongly relate to local lifestyle. The use of Joss paper as a holy object for worshipping can be seen in Chinese community, and the contamination of arsenic in Joss paper is a forgotten issue. Here, the authors appraise on the cancer risk due to exposure to contaminated arsenic in Joss paper. Using the same method as previously published,[1] the risk estimation can be done. According to a recent publication, the contamination of arsenic in Joss paper is equal to 0.46–1.40 μg/g (ppm).[2] According to this basic information, the derived individual lifetime cancer risk is equal to 113.02–343.96. This rate is significantly less than previously observed in the case of arsenic contaminated herbal product. Hence, arsenic contamination in Joss paper should not be the big problematic substance that leads to cancer. The other compositions such as lead, mercury, and cadmium in Joss paper should also be studied and assessed for its cancer risk.
