The recent report on “emergency contraception in a public health emergency” is very interesting.[1] Tavares and Foster [1] noted that “the Zika virus epidemic has shined a spotlight on the importance of providing timely access to emergency contraception in Latin America.” In fact, it is no doubt that contraception is a useful mean for prevention of unwanted abnormal infant due to Zika virus infected mother.[2] However, there are some additional concerns. First, the use of emergency contraception cannot guarantee that there will be no pregnancy. Second, using contraception can prevent possible unwanted abnormal birth but it does not mean prevention of the mother from getting infection. If a woman gets Zika virus infection, there can be other possible complications such as neurological complication. Accompanied with using contraception, self-prevention from mosquito bite such as use of bed net, mosquito coil, and spray is still required. In fact, the topic of Zika risk mitigation does indeed have a far larger scope than just the use of emergency contraception. It has to await the developments from various health authorities on making advice.
