Dear Sir,
The problem of anaphylaxis caused by a mosquito is an interesting problem in tropical medicine. In fact, there are several mosquito-borne diseases. The common problems are infections. Nevertheless, the anaphylaxis is limited mentioned. Hassoun et al. noted "The many allergens of mosquitoes are contained in the juices, and salivary glands and their molecular weights are between 22 and 95 kD. [1]" Hence, it is no doubt that mosquito bite might lead to anaphylaxis. Here, the authors review 7 cases of anaphylaxis after mosquito bite in our setting within a 5-year period (2008-2013). There are 5 males and 2 females (aged between 23 and 35 years old). All cases presented to the medical clinic with the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis. The period after mosquito bite ranges between 5 and 20 min. There is a case that has 2 episodes of mosquito anaphylaxis. All cases were confirmed for anaphylaxis due to mosquito according to the clinical history and the immunological indications (basophil activation tests). Each case was referred to the hospital for Intensive Care Unit hospitalization, and the steroid therapy was used. All cases got fully recovered within 1-day. The mosquito allergy is an important tropical allergy that should not be overlooked. As already mentioned, the protein in saliva of the mosquito is mentioned as the rooted cause of the hypersensitivity. [2],[3],[4],[5] The present advent is the use of new "recombinant salivary allergens" for help diagnosis. [2],[3],[4] The standard therapy is steroid therapy. However, a new alternative treatment, "immunotherapy with whole body mosquito extracts [6]" is also available.
