Coinfection between dengue virus and Zika virus: A complex situation

Dear Editor,

An emerging new arboviral infection, Zika virus infection, becomes the present important public health issue. This new disease can present as an acute viral hemorrhagic fever. Of interest, there are many similar tropical viral hemorrhagic diseases that have to be differentiated from Zika virus infection.[1],[2] It is no doubt that there are possibilities of false negative in diagnosis of Zika virus infection.[1],[2] Nevertheless, it should be noted that there can also be the chance of more complex situation, coinfection between Zika virus infection and other arboviral disease. The recent report on coinfection between dengue and Zika virus infection is very interesting.[3] Although there is no observation on increased severity, the observation raised many concerns as (a) there can be many missed diagnoses of Zika virus coinfection in the patients with dengue, (b) the study to assess the effect of coinfection has to be done, (c) possibility of coinfection with other arboviral diseases have to be kept in mind, and (d) the vector control has to be strictly focused since it is the main mean of arboviral disease control.
