Dengue viremia in blood donors and what to be expected in cases of zika virus

The concern on the transmission of tropical arbovirus via the blood and blood product should be discussed. The previous publication on dengue viremia in blood donors by Mangwana is very interesting.[1] Mangwana mentioned for null prevalence and “NS 1 antigen in all donors was negative.”[1] This finding might imply no risk or it can imply that the routine donor screening such as asking for history of febrile illness can be a sufficient tool for preliminary ruling out of dengue viremia case. In fact, in our country, Thailand, the dengue is highly endemic but there has never been any proof that the dengue screening in donated blood is useful. Based on the present report, further implication might be applied to the present global problem on Zika virus infection. Indeed, Zika virus infection is a dengue-like illness and the risk of transfusion by donated blood is a big issue in transfusion medicine.[2],[3] The interesting question is whether a simple pre donation history taking can be helpful for preliminary screening of Zika virus infection. Indeed, it is no doubt that viremia can be seen in Zika virus infection, which is the same as dengue. However, it should be noted that dengue is rarely asymptomatic but Zika virus can be usually asymptomatic.[4],[5] The study to verify the Zika viremia rate in donated blood in Zika virus endemic area should be considered
