Immunological evidence of Zika virus in Thailand: Further implication for rate of possible infected cases in province with reported case

This study aims to identify immunological evidence of Zika virus transmission in Thailand. It was performed using serum samples collected from a cohort of patients with acute undifferentiated fever. Antibodies against the envelope antigens of two strains of Zika were detected in seven cases, and one isolated viral isolate had a different sequence. These results suggest that ZIKV has been circulating in the Thai population at a low level for a long time.

The findings of this study were made from a review of outbreak investigations in Thailand from January 2012 to December 2014. An outbreak was considered to be a case if two or more patients had symptoms and a positive serum sample was found to be negative for DENV, CHIKV, and IgM antibodies to rubella and measles. In addition, four clusters were identified for further evaluation as possible cases of ZIKV infection.

The results of this study were published in the Journal of Infectious Diseases. In the region where the outbreak was detected, three samples from the province of Ratchaburi were positive. In three other samples, ZIKV RNA was detected. The 77-base pair RT-PCR amplicon used for ZIKV diagnosis was used to identify the virus. The study also examined the serological results in pregnant women. Twenty-five percent of Thai women were infected with ZIKV. A third sample was positive for ZIKV RNA.
