Dear Sir,

Dengue is a common tropical infection that attacks thousands of people each year. The classical presentation is acute febrile illness with thrombocytopenia and hemorrhagic complications. [1],[2] Considering the course of infection, the overt clinical features usually occur late and this leads to difficulty in case management. [1],[2] To have an early diagnosis, the use of a new diagnostic test such as the nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) antigen test can be helpful. Here, the authors present the observation on platelet count among early dengue patients confirmed by the NS1 antigen test. During the epidemic of dengue in 2015, the diagnosis of 118 dengue cases confirmed by the NS1 antigen test were reanalyzed. Of interest, 46 from 118 patients (38.98%) had a normal platelet count. This observation is challenging. It seems that the patients might visit the physician early, when there is still no thrombocytopenia. It is suggested that the use of the NS1 antigen test can be helpful in making early diagnosis of dengue before there is an overt clinical problem. As it is confirmed by previous reports that platelet count at presentation is an important determinant for dengue outcome, [3] early detection at stage with no thrombocytopenia can be helpful.
